Patient, Being
Collection installation for hospital Zuyderland Sittard, Geleen, 2025
In the autumn of 2024, I’ve been spending time at the hospital Zuyderland Sittard-Geleen for multiple days. As paying visits to the hospital weekly myself in Rotterdam, the invitation to create a new work for Zuyderland resonates with my own daily life. I wanted to create work that reflects the intimacy of being there, wandering, hasting, waiting, not knowing. Often unsure until it’s sure, sure until it isn’t anymore.
I got permission to walk around freely, talked to many people and I came close to the inside of the hospital as architecture and organized organ. I used various analogue cameras, capturing fragments of people, objects and the building. Both inside and outside, and in public and non-public areas of the hospital.
The black-and-white background is a photograph of light shining through the leaves of a tree just outside in the surrounding park, while it could just as easily looks like you’re seeing through a microscope.
